How Everything Can Change in a Moment

Betty grabbed her cheap, plastic watering pitcher and walked along the cracked driveway, tracing her same steps that she took the day before across the burnt yard, the sun beating the world with its fiery, sweltering arms. Betty’s calloused feet rubbed the cheap canvas of her shoes as she squished along the driveway.

The bright spot of her day was contained in a purple, plastic pot: a hibiscus plant known as the Texas Star. It was about to bloom any day now. Betty had discovered it, tiny and struggling…
