Night Drive

Into the Desert

L.T. Garvin
Aug 18, 2022

The desert at night

is vibrant

with seething, shifting hotbeds of sand

The highway is a green-eyed panther

stalking the night

A mirage ahead

Cradles the schoolyard by Main Street

A hair bow crushed into the earth

The thirsty earth that

Swallows weary souls

The city far from the desert

Where the drive at night

Coalesces into capture and prey

Where hunting animals

Are the night force

The desert into which we flee

Night flying before us

The places we go, the places we’ve been

The pulling of unseen forces

The heat wrapping us into it all

Cosmic and spellbinding
